At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.
In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.
The Outstanding Athlete award recognizes Special Olympics New Jersey athletes who have shown determination and dedication to training and an increased proficiency in any sport at any competition level. The award was presented by Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland Counties Coordinators, Linda Cobb and Sandra Hanzok.
“Michael Kmiec competes in bowling, golf, and swimming. Some of Michael’s favorite pastimes are attending local fundraisers, pounding the pavement in support for his county, and questioning swim timers and medal presenters if he does not finish in first place.
Michael makes friends everywhere he goes and even befriended former Rutgers and Carolina Panthers football player, JD DiRenzo, at SONJ Summer Games a few years ago. JD surprised Michael on his birthday with a signed jersey from the entire Rutgers football team. He truly leaves an impression on everyone he meets. Michael recently retired from his maintenance job at the Atlantic County Courthouse.”
